South Africa has a large number of different kinds of antelope and the hartebeest is an
interesting character. It possesses an elongated head, unusual bracket-shaped horns, and high forequarters sloping to lower hindquarters. On our safaris, we are most likely to see them in open plains areas with some scrub brush. The hartebeest seems to blend into the background of grasslands and are not easily spotted. Many times, they are found in herds of 10-15 animals. In my visits to South Africa, I have found them in private preserves where they are protected from predators and much easier to approach.
