The Springbok Cocktail

South Africa has some interesting adult beverages. One of my favorites is the “Springbok.” It is made with Green Crème de Menthe and Amarula.Amarula is a cream liqueur from South Africa. It is made with sugar, cream, and the fruit of the African Marula Tree (Sclerocarya birrea) which is also locally called the Elephant tree or the Marriage Tree. If the fruit is eaten in large quantities, it can cause the user intoxication. Elephants are notorious for becoming tipsy after inhaling one too many marula fruits. It has an alcohol content of 17% by volume. It is one of the favorites of native South Africans and worthy of trying out. Be sure to only try one as they are rather potent. It is often served as an after-dinner liquor.

Here is the recipe:

1/2 shot Amarula Cream

1/2 shot Creme de Menthe

Pour the Amarula in a shot glass first then pour the Creme de Menthe on top. The Menthe should sit atop the Amarula creating a nice 1-2 punch!
