Greater Blue-Eared Starling

Writer: John MunsonJohn Munson

Being a bird lover, I was immediately attracted to a bright blue bird about the size of our robin. It had iridescent feathers and black spots on its wings. The blue on its belly and around its eye is very striking. It is a little duller than the Cape Glossy Starling but still a beautiful bird. Consulting my bird book, I found that it was a Greater Blue-Eared Starling and was quite common to South Africa. It was incredibly different from our European Starling and one of about a dozen different starling in South Africa. One of the great

things about my photography safaris is the challenge of identifying new birds. It happens almost every day and never gets old.
