John's Favorite South African Breakfast

After having done lots of safaris, I have had many great breakfasts but one that sticks in my mind happened in the little town of Pilgrims Rest. Pilgrims Rest is an old gold/silver mining town, built in 1873. Today, it primarily thrives on tourist. It has a couple of unique restaurants, but my favorite is the Pilgrims Pantry. While their menu has a full array of choices, I love the pancakes or Pannenkoek. They are a flat, thin slightly thicker version of the French Crepe and come stuffed with a wide variety of ingredients such as smoked salmon salad, strawberries and cream, or cinnamon and whipped cream. Wonderful coffee and if you are adventurous you can have a home-made milkshake with a bit of booze.
